Teacher Training and Continued Professional Development in Sierra Leone
In 2011 we brought twelve Sierra Leonean teachers to the UK for training and personal development. In 2016 we repeated the programme with a further twelve. It was a life-transforming experience for all those who took part and no less of one for their trainers. Now, having planted the seeds, we are reaping the rewards: those teachers have taken charge of delivering the programme and are sharing their experience with -and inspiring hope and optimism among – their colleagues and the children of a country that has been torn by war and disease.
Working with EducAid Sierra Leone, in 2011 the Steve Sinnott Foundation hosted 12 teacher trainers from Sierra Leone in the UK and held teaching-focused workshops with them over 10 days. These teacher trainers shadowed UK teachers to see good teaching in practice before returning to rural Sierra Leone to offer teacher training and CPD to over 159 teachers benefiting thousands of pupils.
Starting in February 2016, again working in a strong partnership with EducAid Sierra Leone, the Steve Sinnott Foundation has repeated the project on a larger scale to reach over 250 teachers throughout the Port Loko District in northern Sierra Leone and benefiting over 7000 pupils over the years 2016 to 2018.
